Echinocereus polyacanthus subsp. acifer is a subspecies of the species Echinocereus polyacanthus in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from the ancient Greek Akanthos (ὁ ἄκανθος "the thorny") with a Latin ending and the prefix poly (πολύς) = many. The name of the subspecies acifer ( Latin “needle-bearing”) emphasizes the strong thorns.

description

The plant that sprouts from the base forms small cushions consisting of 5 to 8 stems . The dark green plant body is cylindrical and reaches heights of 10 to 40 cm with a diameter of 5 to 10 cm. The 9 to 12 ribs are very warty and bumpy. The areoles are tomentose in the new shoot, are 1 to 1.5 cm apart and have a diameter of about 3 mm. The thorns are yellow to red-brown, later gray. The up to 5 protruding central spines are surrounded by 10 to 15 radial radial spines.

The buds appear from a woolly white pad with red-brown bristles. The funnel-shaped flowers are red on the outside and yellow on the inside and are rarely lopsided. They are 8 to 12 cm long and have a diameter of up to 10 cm. In contrast to the monoecious ( monoecious ) flowers of Echinocereus polyacanthus , the flowers of Echinocereus polyacanthus subsp. acifer hermaphroditic and self-pollinating (self-fertile). The stamens are yellow, the stigma is green to light green. The oval fruits remain greenish and measure 2 cm in diameter and 3 cm in length.

Distribution and systematics

Echinocereus polyacanthus subsp. acifer is found in the Mexican states of Guanajuato (type locality), Zacatecas , San Luis Potosí and Durango . The cactus usually grows on rocky patches of forest, in moss or crevices.

It was first described as Cereus acifer in 1850 by Christoph Friedrich Otto in Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dycks Cacteae in horto Dyckensi cultae anno 1849 . Nigel Paul Taylor presented it in 1997 as a subspecies to the species Echinocereus polyacanthus .

Echinocereus polyacanthus subsp. acifer and Echinocereus polyacanthus cannot be crossed with one another. Therefore, for Echinocereus polyacanthus subsp. acifer often uses the synonym Echinocereus acifer . Further synonyms are: Echinopsis valida var. Densa and Echinocereus polyacanthus var. Densus .
