Echinocereus scopulorum is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet scopulorum is the plural of the Latin word scopulus , means 'mountain peak', 'cliff' or 'rock' and refers to the preferred habitat of the species.

description

Echinocereus scopulorum grows individually. The cylindrical shoots are 10 to 40 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 10 centimeters. They are hidden by the thorns. There are 13 to 15 ribs . The three to ten protruding central spines are shorter than the radial spines. The approximately 20 radial spines lie on the shoots. They are whitish, have a darker tip and are 0.4 to 1.4 centimeters long.

The fragrant funnel-shaped flowers are light pink to magenta and have a white throat. They appear near the shoot tips, are 7 to 8.5 inches long and reach a diameter of up to 10 inches. The spherical to egg-shaped fruits are dark green and contain white pulp . When ripe, they are dry, but do not tear.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus scopulorum is found on the coast of the Mexican state of Sonora and the Isla Tiburón, as well as in the states of Sinaloa and Nayarit .

The first description by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose was published in their 1922 work The Cactaceae .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
