Echinopsis calochlora is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet calochlora is derived from the Greek words kalos for 'beautiful' and chloros for 'green' and refers to the shiny green epidermis of the species.

description

Echinopsis calochlora grows individually or in groups. The spherical, deep green to light green shoots reach a diameter of 6 to 9 centimeters. There are 13 to 16 wide ribs that are notched. The areoles on it are sunk and are up to 1.5 centimeters apart. Yellow needle-like thorns spring from them . The three to four dark-tipped central spines are slightly longer than the 14 to 20 radial spines. The radial spines are ascending and up to 1 centimeter long.

The long funnel-shaped white flowers appear laterally and open at night. They become up to six inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis calochlora is distributed in southwestern Brazil and in eastern Bolivia at altitudes of 500 to 1000 meters.

The first description by Karl Moritz Schumann was published in 1903.

A nomenclature synonym is Lobiviopsis calochlora (K.Schum.) Frič (1935, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 43.1). Echinopsis grandiflora Linke (1857) is assigned as a synonym for the species .

Echinopsis calochlora subsp. calochlora
The subspecies is common in the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso , Mato Grosso do Sul and possibly Goiás as well as in the Bolivian department of Santa Cruz . However, their area of ​​distribution is poorly known. The dark green shoots reach a diameter of up to 9 centimeters. There are 13, rarely 14 ribs and the flowers are up to 16 centimeters long.

The first description of the subspecies Echinopsis calochlora subsp. named after Wolfgang Glätzle . glaetzleana by Pierre Josef Braun and Eddie Esteves Pereira was published in 1994. It is common on limestone cliffs in the Pantanal in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul . The subspecies sprouts stronger, its light green shoots have a diameter of only 4 centimeters (rarely up to 7.5 centimeters). There are 14 to 16 ribs. The flowers are smaller than those of the subspecies Echinopsis calochlora subsp. calochlora . A synonym is Echinopsis calochlora var. Albispina Backbg. (1962, nom. Invalid ICBN -Article 37.1).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
