Oreocereus hempelianus is a species of the genus Oreocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Foreign language trivial names are "Achacaño" and "Arequipa".

description

Oreocereus hempelianus grows with spherical to elongated, gray-green shoots branching from the base and reaches heights of 30 to 40 centimeters. There are 12 to 24 wide and flat ribs . The initially yellow to reddish thorns later turn cloudy gray. The one to six central spines are flexible and 2 to 5 centimeters long. The 10 to 15 radial spines are flexible, spreading and 1 to 3 inches long.

The crooked red flowers appear at the shoot tips. They are 6 to 7 inches long. The barrel-shaped fruits reach a length of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Oreocereus hempelianus is in the Peruvian Arequipa and northern Chile spread at altitudes from 2,500 to 3,500 meters.

It was first described as Echinopsis hempeliana in 1906 by Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke . David Richard Hunt placed them in the genus Oreocereus in 1987 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
