Echinopsis litoralis grows shrubby , branches from the base with several bent or upright branches and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. The cylindrical, gray-green to dark-green shoots reach a diameter of 10 to 12 centimeters. There are about 20 rather distinct and not very broad ribs that are somewhat humped. The crooked areoles on them are yellowish white and are up to 1 centimeter apart. The thorns emerging from them are initially yellowish and later turn gray. The funnel-shaped, white flowers appear laterally near the shoot tips and are also open during the day. They are 12 to 14 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 10 centimeters. The brownish green fruits reach a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis litoralis is common in the Chilean regions of Coquimbo and Valparaíso in the immediate vicinity of the coast.

The first description as Cereus litoralis by Friedrich Richard Adelbert Johow was published in 1923. Heimo Friedrich and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1974 in the genus Echinopsis .
