Echinopsis pampana is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pampana refers to the occurrence of the species in the Peruvian Pampa de Arrieros .

Echinopsis pampana usually grows singly and only rarely sprouts. The spherical, blue-green to gray-green shoots reach a diameter of 10 centimeters and a height of up to 7.5 centimeters. They have a large tap root . There are 18 to 30 broad, sharp-edged, wavy ribs at their base , which are arranged in a spiral and humped with crooked cusps. The areoles on them are 1 to 2 centimeters apart. The needle-like to elastic thorns arising from them are yellowish pink to brown to blackish. The one or two upwardly curved central spines are up to 7 centimeters long. The nine to ten slightly curved radial spines have a length of 1 centimeter.
The short funnel-shaped flowers are open during the day. They are colored pink-beige to orange-red to yellow. The flowers are 3 to 5 centimeters (rarely up to 7 centimeters) long and have the same diameter. The egg-shaped to spherical fruits are juicy and reach a diameter of 2 centimeters.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Echinopsis pampana is common in the Peruvian regions of Arequipa and Moquegua at altitudes of 3500 to 4100 meters.
The first description as Lobivia pampana by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1922. David Richard Hunt placed the species in 1991 in the genus Echinopsis .
The following taxa were included in the species as a synonym : Echinopsis mistiensis Werderm. & Backeb. (1931), Lobivia mistiensis (Werderm. & Backeb.) Backeb. (1934), Lobivia mistiensis var. Brevispina Backeb. (1936, nom. Inval. ICBN article 36.1), Lobivia mistiensis var. Leucantha Backeb. (1936, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 36.1), Lobivia aureosenilis Kníže (1969), Lobivia glaucescens F.Ritter (1981), Lobivia pampana var. Borealis Rausch (1987), Lobivia scheeri var. Borealis (Rausch) Rausch (1992 ) and Lobivia moqueguana Kníže ex Rausch (1992, nom. inval. ICBN -Article 34.1c).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
