The Hierro-adder's head ( Echium hierrense ) is a plant species from the genus of the adder's heads ( Echium ) in the predatory family (Boraginaceae). It is endemic to the Canary Island El Hierro .

Vegetative characteristics

The Hierro-Adderkopf grows as a dense, branched shrub and reaches heights of up to 1.5 meters. The leaves are short stalked or sessile. The leaf blade is lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate with a pointed upper end with a length of up to 12 centimeters and a width of up to 1.5 centimeters; it is finely hairy on both sides.

Generative characteristics

The dense cylindrical inflorescences are up to 20 centimeters long. The 10 to 12 millimeters long, broadly funnel-shaped flowers are white to pale blue or pale purple.

Occurrence

The Hierro-Adderkopf prefers rocky locations in the forest area, but occurs up to the succulent bush area.

It can also be found on El Hierro as an ornamental plant.
