In 1846 he was in Berlin with a thesis De vegetatione alpina in Germania extra-Alpes obvia (On the alpine vegetation in Germany outside the Alps) to Dr. med. PhD . However, he never practiced the profession of a medical doctor, but devoted himself entirely to his natural history interests. In 1867 he bought the v. Humboldt the island of Scharfenberg near Tegel, north of Berlin. Here he built a villa in 1883 and laid out a dendrological garden ( arboretum ). The villa was demolished in 1951, but some of the trees he planted have been preserved. His grave was in the old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . The tomb stands today on the island of Scharfenberg.
