Echium pininana (giant adder 's head), Span. Pininana , is an herbaceous plant up to four meters high and one of the largest Echium species. It was originally endemic to the Canary Island of La Palma .

features

Habitus

The plant forms a single, unbranched trunk, up to 75 cm high, on which the leaf rosette sits. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate and up to 50 cm long and 6–10 cm wide. The inflorescence is up to 4 m high and is leafed through. The flowers are up to 13 mm long. They are usually blue to blue-violet, more rarely white with blue veins.

Occurrence and distribution

The giant adder head was originally endemic to the Canary Island of La Palma . It grows there in the laurel forests in the northeast of the island in only a few locations at about 600 m above sea level, e.g. B. Cubo de la Galga, Barranco des Los Tilos and Monte de Barlovento. It's rare there. The plant is now also widely used as an ornamental plant. In regions with mild winter conditions, the plant can even survive the winter with moisture protection. In southern England e.g. B. the plant can be found in many places. Temperatures down to -4 ° shouldn't bother her, but overwintering in a light, frost-free greenhouse is safer.

The species prefers partially shaded, relatively dry locations on permeable soil in the laurel forest. However, the soil must never dry out completely. The species takes up to four years to develop the inflorescence. After flowering, the plant slowly dies and forms plenty of seeds (usually several hundred).

Hazards and protective measures

Although the population of this species is decreasing, no concrete hazardous situations are known. This species is classified as particularly worthy of protection in Spain and occurs in various protected areas.
