The Eckbauerbahn is a detachable monocable gondola that goes from the Olympic ski stadium to the Eckbauer (1237 m) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . The cable car, which opened in 1956, was decommissioned in 2018 and replaced by a new one that has been in operation since 2019.

The small cabin lift , built by Pohlig-Heckel-Bleichert on behalf of Wank-Bahn AG and commissioned on December 23, 1956 after 30 years of planning , had an inclined length of 2140 m. From the valley station at 730 m above sea level, it overcame a 500 m difference in altitude to the mountain station at 1230 m above sea level. The 75 half-open 2-seater gondolas drove at a speed of 2.5 m / s (9 km / h) at a low height over 27 cable car supports . The cable car reached a maximum capacity of 300 people per hour. The journey time was 14 minutes. The hauling rope had a diameter of 27 mm. The drive was in the mountain station, the tension weight in the valley station.

The braking and acceleration sections in the stations could be seen as a special feature of the railway. The gondolas were slowed down using three different conveyor systems and then accelerated back to rope speed, whereby the acceleration of the cabins by rope sled could be described as an absolute rarity.

In 1998 the Eckbauerbahn became part of the Wankbahn AG and was transferred to the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG. At the end of December 2002 the Eckbauerbahn was sold by the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn. As a result, the Partenkirchner BergBahnen GmbH & Co. KG was founded, which operates the railway together with the Graseckbahn .

After 52 years of operation, the cable car ceased operations on October 7, 2018. The operation continued with the unchanged two-seater small cabins from the opening year until it was closed.

The reason for the closure was that spare parts could hardly be procured and instead had to be manufactured by hand. An economical operation was therefore almost impossible. In addition, the foundations of the 27 pillars were in need of renovation.

Second cable car

At the same location, a new monocable gondola was built in a seven-month construction period, which went into operation on May 16, 2019. The new lift transports up to 570 people per hour and offers space for six people in 45 gondolas. A new café was built at the valley station and an extension was added to the mountain station.
