Eckhard Sperling

Eckhard Sperling (born February 19, 1925 in Potsdam , † April 17, 2007 in Göttingen ) was a German physician and psychoanalyst . He is considered a pioneer in family therapy .

Life

Eckhard Sperling grew up in Potsdam. From 1943 he studied medicine; In 1949 he was approved . He moved to West Berlin, where in 1950 at the Free University of Berlin with a thesis on the "frequency of Spätlues " to Dr. med. PhD . After working at the Institute for Neuropathology at the University of Bonn and the Psychiatric Clinic at the University of Bern , he became a research assistant in 1958 at what was then the University Psychiatric Clinic at the University of Göttingen .

In 1960 he became a specialist in nervous and mental disorders; 1962 with the addition "Psychotherapy". In 1965 Eckhard Sperling completed his habilitation in Göttingen with a thesis on the "Psychosocial situation of the brain injured"; he received the venia legendi for the subject "Psychiatry, especially medical psychology and psychotherapy". In 1966 he was named university lecturer at the University of Göttingen.

In 1970 Eckhard Sperling became head of the then newly founded department for psycho- and sociotherapy (family therapy) of the Center for Psychological Medicine (today: Center for Psychosocial Medicine) at the University of Göttingen, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. In 1966 he was the initiator and director of the medical-psychological counseling center for students at the University of Göttingen.

Act

Eckhard Sperling's research focus was on family therapy and sociotherapy . Against the background of social change in the 1960s, he introduced pioneering new therapeutic options. He advocated that psychotherapy should be carried out in an age- and reference group-specific manner, patient-oriented and not method-oriented. In the 1980s, he and Hans-Werner Gessmann were one of the co-founders of the systems therapy course at the Bergerhausen Psychotherapeutic Institute .
