The Psychotherapeutic Institute Bergerhausen (PIB) was founded in 1973 in Duisburg by Hans-Werner Gessmann and takes its name from the Bergerhausen moated castle in Kerpen near Cologne . It is an advanced training institute for humanistic psychotherapies and psychological assistant professions and maintains a psychotherapeutic and the oldest sleep medicine outpatient clinic in Germany.

history

After the establishment of a pedagogical-psychological institute in Duisburg in 1973, an in-patient therapy facility for female adolescents worked in the Bergerhausen water castle from 1976 to 1989 . The facility has been located in Duisburg-Althomberg since 1997.

The PIB is one of the oldest private psychotherapy facilities in Germany, which carries out further training in the psychosocial area and provides important care for the population with a psychotherapeutic outpatient clinic and the first outpatient sleep medicine center in Germany. The occupational profile of psychological-technical assistance was conceived by the PIB as early as the 1970s, which was subsequently adopted by the Federal Employment Agency.

Since 1980, the humanistic psychodrama has been developed to differentiate it from other forms through the publication of a series of publications "Humanistic Psychodrama", an international journal and pioneering work in numerous educational films. Since 1998, the institute's sleep medicine center has been developing tongue muscle training (ZMT®), an alternative treatment for some forms of sleep apnea syndrome. In the same year, the institute took over the specialty clinic for addicts Landhaus Streithof in Mülheim ad Ruhr from the German Red Cross.

Cooperations

There are cooperations with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the Academy of Social Administration in Moscow, the Moscow State Psychological-Pedagogical University and the State Nekrasov University in Kostroma, as well as numerous other institutions. The institute is a constitutional member of the German Society for Systemic Therapy, Counseling and Family Therapy (DGSF) and in many other national and international professional associations.

Publishing house of the PIB

The scientific publishing house affiliated to the institute publishes a series of publications on humanistic psychodrama, creates and sells an international specialist journal for humanistic psychodrama and produces educational video films for the respective departments. The publishing house has been significantly involved in the further development of the medical aptitude test ÜTMS with publications since 1980.

The support group for psychosocial care e. V. was founded in 1990. The task and purpose of the association is to provide financial support to needy patients. The association also supports the work of therapeutic institutions, counseling centers and training and further education events for counselors and therapists through donations and staff. The self-help group "Sleep apnea - respiratory arrest - Duisburg" has joined the sponsorship group.
