life and work

Gessmann received his doctorate in 1976 on the causative factors of dyslexia , in the same year after he had met Helen Singer Kaplan in New York, he first applied the humanistic psychodrama he founded in connection with hypnosis in the treatment of sexual disorders and introduced psychodrama into child psychotherapy . He did pioneering work in German-speaking countries through scientific film documentations, the publication of a series of publications entitled "Humanistic Psychodrama" and the publication of an international journal on humanistic psychodrama. Gessmann is one of the few empirical researchers in the field of psychodrama and has published over 180 texts and film documentaries on psychological topics. His work on the method of doubling from 1996 set standards . He founded the Bergerhausen Psychotherapeutic Institute in Duisburg in 1973 , then from 1977 to 1989 in the Bergerhausen castle near Kerpen, which was previously the center for the further development of humanistic psychotherapies and integrative systems and family therapy used by more than 1,500 psychotherapists. After the unexpected death of the castle owner, Baron Clemens von Loé, the institute continued to work in Duisburg.

As a focus of his work, Gessmann developed and taught humanistic psychodrama as a new form of psychodrama since 1979 . It became an integral part of the humanistic psychology that was founded in 1960 . Gessmann moved the collective action and nature of the human being at the center of therapeutic ethics. Faith, love, hope and the idea of a human community gave meaning to the humanistic psychodrama. Intuitive looking to grasp the wholeness of a thing, the dialectical understanding of polarities, the renunciation of absolute authority, have a decisive influence on the image of people and their lives. The goals and methods of classical psychodrama were necessarily re-evaluated and described. This led to a fundamental change in psychodrama practice worldwide. Gessmann has been a member of the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama, the International Association of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama and the German Association for Psychodrama since 1977.

In 1986 Gessmann founded Germany's first outpatient sleep laboratory with the Sleep Medicine Center department. In this, under his direction from 1998 to 2002, the tongue muscle training with the registered trademark ZMT ® was developed as an alternative treatment method against sleep apnea.

After the introduction of the test for medical courses (TMS, colloquially also medical test) in 1986, Gessmann recreated the original several times for training purposes. These training versions are published under the title Ü-TMS.

Gessmann teaches and researches as a university professor for clinical psychology in the Faculty of Social Psychology of the State Nekrasov University in Kostroma since 2007, for general and developmental psychology at the State Academy of Social Administration in Moscow, professor since 2009. In April 2011 he became the 1st German with the right to award doctorates in Russia Director of the Russian International Center for Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Kostroma State University with a focus on psychotherapy training and research. Under his leadership, German-Russian experts from the psychosocial professions work together to create innovative, independent psychotherapy training courses for Russia. Since 2012 he has been teaching systemic family therapy and humanistic psychodrama at the Faculty of Legal Psychology of Moscow State Psychological-Pedagogical University (MGPPU) . Starting in 2013, Gessmann has been visiting professor at the Smolensk State University. Here he teaches humanistic psychodrama. His intercultural work is supported by the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia. He is included in the list of important psychotherapists by Stanford University UC in Berkeley and is one of the world's 30 most influential living psychologists. In September 2017, Hans-Werner Gessmann first introduced the group psychotherapy Humanistic Psychodrama in Azerbaijan. 141 psychotherapists from the country took part in the event in Baku. 2019 Member of the International Organizing Committee of the VI.
