Hellmuth Benesch

Hellmuth Benesch (born December 24, 1924 in Dux , Czechoslovakia ; † September 26, 2012 in Wackernheim ) was a Sudeten German psychologist and university professor .

Life

Hellmuth Benesch was born in 1924 in the town of Dux, which was roughly evenly inhabited by Czechs and Germans, in the then new state of Czechoslovakia . Since the Sudetenland had been incorporated into Germany due to the Munich Agreement , he was drafted into the Wehrmacht after attending school . In World War II, Benesch fought on the Eastern Front and was seriously wounded in 1944. After the end of the war and the expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia , Benesch lived in the GDR. He studied psychology and philosophy at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and received his doctorate in 1953. Benesch moved to Germany and completed his habilitation in 1968 at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen .

In 1972 Hellmuth Benesch became professor for clinical psychology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . He taught at the Psychological Institute until his retirement in 1990 and was dean of the associated faculty in 1975 and from 1985 to 1987.

Benesch's work focused on clinical psychology, psychotherapy , motivational psychology with regard to electronic games and their use in care.

Benesch gained further notoriety with his dtv atlas Psychology, in which the entire psychology is presented in an overview and an introduction to the most diverse topics illustrated with drawings is presented in an extremely concise form. This two-volume dtv psychology atlas has been reprinted many times and translated into several languages. Hellmuth Benesch is also the sole author of the extensive encyclopedic dictionary on clinical psychology and psychotherapy.
