Ed Watzke (* 1951 in Austria) is an Austrian mediator , social worker , psychotherapist , author , storyteller and playback actor .

Life

Ed Watzke studied sociology and education at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate there. Since 1985 he has been pacifying conflicts in the out-of-court settlement of offenses (comparable to the German perpetrator-victim settlement ) and in mediation . He is also a lecturer at the Fernuniversität in Hagen , a freelance trainer, supervisor, coach, storyteller and, as a cultural scientist, seeks the connection between art / poetry and science. He lives in Vienna .

Mediation and therapy methods

From his practice with more than 2,000 conflict cases, he developed approaches and methods for mediation that can also be used in psychotherapy or other therapeutic settings. In addition to the procedure for the co-mediation mixed doubles including the reflecting team approach, he developed the client placement and form of conversation called tandem for individual mediators or therapists .

In his opinion, an important procedure he has published is the metaphor bridge . He presents these in his book Probably this story has nothing to do with you… . The metaphor bridge precedes the usual phases in mediation with a moderated process for finding and securing peace. With this, the mediator asks, checks and ensures that the mediators really want a solution to the conflict and are able to find it (with support if necessary). Completely independent of the content of the dispute or problem, the metaphor bridge first wants to bring the mediators to a peaceful, constructive approach. Only then are the (then still open) content-related questions addressed. A quote from Watzke is: “We humans show an astonishingly high willingness to invest a lot in the war. However, we assume that the peace has to be in vain or that the opposing side should only pay for it. From many years of experience as a mediator, however, I know that mutual listing of demands, allegations, injuries, assignments of blame, etc. does not lead to the path of peace. For the time being, peace is not a ' win-win business' but a ' pay-pay business'. Not holding on, letting go is the order of the day, an art that life often teaches us despite our persistent refusal. ” In his methods and procedures, Ed Watzke uses the provocative style developed by Frank Farrelly . He sees humor as the shortest bridge between two people and uses narratives , metaphors , sayings and aphorisms to get mediators to think, rethink and, if possible, change their behavior in relation to the conflict.

The knowledge gained by Watzke and the methods he developed belong to the basis of the procedure in the offender-victim reconciliation, are part of mediation training, can be found in general or special mediation literature and are referenced by the mediation associations.

Playback theater

Ed Watzke founded and runs the “Adhoc-Theater Wien” together with Aniko Kaposvari. This is a playback theater group that offers viewers the chance to stage and present their stories (a special form of improv theater related to theater sport ).
