Edda Heiðrún Backman

Edda Heiðrún Backman (born November 27, 1957 in Akranes , † October 1, 2016 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic actress, director, painter and environmentalist.

life and work

After graduating from the Icelandic Drama School in 1983, Edda Heiðrún pursued a successful career as an actress until 2004. After she had worked in the 1985 film Schwarz und ohne Zucker by Lutz Konermann , she made various other film appearances, including in 2000 in 101 Reykjavík by Baltasar Kormákur and in 2004 in Kaldaljós by Hilmar Oddsson . In 2003 she won the Icelandic film and television award Edda in the category Best Supporting Actress for her role in the New Year's show Áramótaskaup of the Icelandic radio company RÚV .

After she was diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND) in 2004 , she turned to work as a theater director and directed several productions at both the Reykjavík City Theater and the Icelandic National Theater . In 2007 she opened the store Súkkulaði og rósir , whose range - as the Icelandic name suggests - consisted of chocolate and roses. In 2008 she turned to mouth painting .

Edda Heiðrún Backman campaigned for the rights of the disabled and also emerged in the Icelandic conservation movement. At the beginning of 2016 she founded the association Rödd náttúrunnar ("Voice of Nature"). It was particularly important to her to create a national park in the Icelandic highlands .
