Edwin A. "Eddie" Finckel (born December 23, 1917 in Washington, DC ; † May 7, 2001 in Madison , New Jersey ) was an American jazz pianist , composer and arranger .

Live and act

Edwin Finckel began to play the piano under the influence of the music of Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum . He studied at Columbia University with Otto Luening , George Antheil and John Cage . From the 1940s he worked as an arranger for band leaders such as Boyd Raeburn , Les Brown , Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich . He also wrote music for feature films such as Red Roses for Me and George White's Scandals (1945). He composed the titles Leave Us Leap, Quiet Riot, Gypsy Mood, Up and Atom, Bolero Boogie, El Mundo and Starburst . One of his most famous songs was Where is the One , which Frank Sinatra featured on his album Where Are You? grossed. As a pianist Finckel u. a. with Max Roach , Allen Eager and Lester Young .

Finckel, who worked primarily as a music teacher from the 1950s (until his death in a Brook School music school in Short Hills, New Jersey ), wrote a total of over 200 compositions for various ensembles. These include vocal and orchestral works, instrumental concerts as well as theater and ballet music. In 1992/93 he composed for the Omega Ensemble. He also published a collection of round songs , which also contains his own round songs. His son David Finkel, who plays as a cellist in the Emerson String Quartet , recorded several works by his father, including a suite for cello and piano ( Of Human Kindness ), the Songs of Spring and a revised version of a jazz standard , Variations on a Theme: Willow Weep for Me . Finckel was the brother-in-law of jazz and studio musician Harry Klee .
