life and career

Eddie Foy Jr. was born to the vaudeville star Eddie Foy senior (1856-1928) and his wife Madeline (1869-1918). As a child, he and his six siblings became famous when he appeared with them on numerous stages across the United States. At the age of eight he made his film debut in the short film The Other Side of the Fence . Eddie Foy was the second youngest member of the Seven Little Foys . He continued his acting career into adulthood, making his Broadway debut in 1929 in the Florence-Ziegfeld production Show Girl, alongside Ruby Keeler andJimmy Durante . Until the early 1960s he appeared several times on Broadway, including in the 1931 premiere of Jerome Kern's musical The Cat and the Fiddle . For his starring role in the Broadway comedy Rumple , he received a Tony Award nomination in 1958 .

In addition to his numerous theater engagements, Foy also played in a total of more than 90 film and television productions up to 1977. He also resembled his famous father outwardly and embodied him in the four movies Frontier Marshal (1939), Lillian Russell (1940), Yankee Doodle Dandy ( 1942) and Wilson (1944). He played his father again in 1964 for the hour-long television production The Seven Little Foys . Most of Foy's films have been low-budget, with the exception of the 1957 Doris Day comedy Picnic in Pajamas , where he played the jealous Vernon 'Hinesie' Hines . At the side of Dudley Moore , he took on a major supporting role in the comedy Trau nobody over 30 in 1968 .

He was married to Barbara Newberry from 1930 until their divorce in 1932, then to Anna Marie McKenney from 1933 until her death in 1952. With the latter he had the son Eddie Foy III.
