background

Irene Dunne came to Hollywood in early 1930 with a contract with the newly founded film company RKO . She had some experience as a singer, most recently at a Show Boat performance in Chicago. The studio saw a talented vocalist in Dunne and made her debut in the film adaptation of Present Arms , a musical by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart from 1928. With the advent of talkies , the musical genre was one of the most profitable innovations. At the same time, the oversupply of partly second and third class productions led to a rapid oversaturation of the market as early as the beginning of 1930. Sun has also Leathernecking after the premiere only a modest success at the box office. The studio planned to immediately use Dunne in the film adaptation of Victor Herbert's operetta Babes in Toyland alongside the popular comedian duo Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey and Edna May Oliver . However, the general apathy of the audience towards music films led to the preparations being abandoned. Irene Dunne instead appeared in Cimarron and made her breakthrough as a star in this dramatic role.

There are no more copies of Leathernecking today .
