Eddy Hamel (born October 21, 1902 in New York City , † April 30, 1943 in Auschwitz ) was an American football player for the Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam .

Hamel was the first Jewish player to join the ranks of Ajax. Born in New York City , Hamel moved to Amsterdam when he was a teenager. As a right winger, Hamel soon became a regular at Ajax. He was the first player with a Jewish background to make it into the regular team. And to date, only three others have followed him - Johnny Roeg , Bennie Muller and Daniël de Ridder . Hamel was a fan favorite and pre-World War II club legend Wim Anderiesen described him as part of the strongest line-up he has ever played with.

After retiring as a player, Hamel managed the Alcmaria Victrix club for three years and continued to play for the Ajax veteran team.

Hamel was also the only World War II victim who played for the Ajax regular team. He was murdered in Auschwitz on April 30, 1943 . In the TV documentary Auschwitz in court , Leon Greenman , his fellow prisoner in Auschwitz, said he was standing in line in front of Eddy during the medical camp selection when Eddy told him he had an abscess in his mouth. While Greenman was passing the selection , Hamel was sent to the gas chamber for his abscess .
