Edelfrid Buggel (born May 22, 1928 , † April 30, 2000 ) was a German sports scientist and university professor .

Life

Buggel studied at the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig and submitted his doctoral thesis in 1957. This was entitled: "The development of off-road capabilities - the task of tourist hikes in increasing the defense skills of primary school students: a contribution to the systematic as well as to the content and methodological design of tourist hikes with eleven to twelve year old boys". In 1965, Bugel's post-doctoral thesis entitled “Vacation leisure time and its structure of relationships in adult life: a sociological-pedagogical study on active physical-cultural relaxation on vacation as a contribution to the theory of physical culture” was accepted.

From 1967 to 1990 he was an honorary professor for leisure and recreational sports at the DHfK, where he headed the popular sports research department and was vice-rector for research. Buggel was also Vice President of the German Gymnastics and Sports Association (DTSB), Vice President of the Association for Hiking, Mountaineering and Orienteering (DWBO) and Deputy State Secretary for Science and Research in the State Secretariat for Physical Culture and Sport at the Council of Ministers of the German Democratic Republic . In the book “Hormones and High Performance: Doping in East and West” published by Klaus Latzel and Lutz Niethammer in 2008, Buggel was mentioned in the chapter “GDR compulsory doping and consequential damage - feedback effects vs. System Effectiveness ”accused of having been“ closely connected to research into and instruction in doping ”in his function as Deputy State Secretary for Physical Culture and Sport.

He took over the management of the International Socialist Research Association, which was established at the beginning of March 1961 and which also included representatives from Poland , Hungary and the CSSR .

In 1965, a representative survey of the leisure behavior of the GDR population was carried out under Buggels and Günter Erbach's leadership , excluding competitive sports. One of the findings of the study was that 30 percent of the GDR population between 16 and 75 years of age did sport, play and hiking as active forms of recreation. He opposed the view of a neglect of popular sport in the GDR compared to competitive sport. Buggel's research focused on sport and tourism, the development of popular sport, sporting activity in relation to gender, age and occupation, the state promotion of physical culture and sport in the GDR, but also skiing and winter sports in general.

Buggel worked in the World Council for Sport and Physical Education (ICSPE) and the successor organization World Council for Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) and later became an honorary member of the association.
