action

Maddalena Dergan, niece of the old antiquarian and moneylender Dergan, is engaged to Pieter Swandam. One day she meets the handsome Count Forrest and falls in love with him. Count Forrest is in need of money and therefore has to borrow a diadem, an old family heirloom, from old Dergan. When old Dergan dies, Maddalena is drawn to the Count and lets his wife hire her as a companion in order to be close to their love. She too soon dies, and so the way is clear for Maddalena to become the next Countess Forrest. Her addiction to possessions and wealth in the form of precious stones will soon doom her. Barely married, Maddalena commits suicide in a fit of deep despair.
