action

Count Erwin loves Leonore, the wife of his uncle, Count Riedingen. In order to get rid of the old man, Erwin bribed the forester, who had recently been dismissed from Riedingen, to get the unloved competitor out of the way. In fact, the old man is killed in a hunting accident. Everyone assumes that it must have been an accident in which a new model of rifle is to be blamed. The young countess, who became a widow at an early age, is certain that there has been a crime. Because her deceased husband owned two rifles of the same type, and the other rifle has disappeared. With the help of an experienced judicial advisor, she follows the lead and finally has to discover that the fired forester has been brought back to his old position by the heir and new majorate, Count Erwin.

To create a context between the two events, she has the forester's apartment examined. In fact, cartridges are found there that fit the second, missing rifle. It is now clear that the forester must have carried out the attack on Count Riedingen with this second rifle. The wrongdoer meets the just punishment when he is killed by a falling tree while walking through the forest. Lying dying, he admits that Count Erwin instigated him to commit this murder. Countess Leonore then invites you to hunt for precious game and confronts Erwin with her research. She gives him a choice: either he would choose the death of a man of honor by judging himself, or she would see that he was arrested in the most dishonorable manner. As is usual in such circles, Count Erwin committed suicide.
