Edgar Brown (botanist)

Edgar Brown (born September 25, 1871 in Farmington , Ontario County , New York , † November 10, 1969 in Frederick , Frederick County , Maryland ) was an American botanist .

Life

Family and education

Edgar Brown, son of Amos C. Brown and his wife Emma L. Smith Brown, who grew up in the city of Farmington in the state of New York, turned to studying biology at Union College in Schenectady , New York , after attending public schools to, took place there in 1895 his promotion to the Ph. D.

His first marriage was Edgar Brown on August 14, 1902, with Harriet V. Tefft. On June 6, 1934, he married his second wife, Elizabeth T. Gould. The resident of Mount Airy , Maryland, died in the fall of 1969 at the old age of 98. Edgar Brown was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery on Mount Airy.

Professional background

After completing his degree, Edgar Brown received a position as a botanist at the Seed Testing Laboratory of the US Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC , in 1902 he was promoted to Principal Botanist , in 1938 he was retired. He was also a founding member of the Washington Biologists' Field Club in 1900 , of which he was made an Honorary Member in 1960. Between 1900 and 1901 he served there as treasurer . Brown, founder of the Official Seed Analysis Association in 1908 , was also awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the International Institute of Agricultural Botany in Cambridge , England . He was also a member of the Washington Academy of Science, the Phi Gamma Delta , the Sigma Xi , the Society of Friends and the Club Cosmos.

Edgar Brown, author of more than 20 US Department of Agriculture publications , developed new test methods and standards, including a rapid method for determining moisture in grain with Joseph Duvel in 1907 and a seed counter in 1928.
