Edgar David Coolidge

Edgar David Coolidge (born July 15, 1881 in Galesburg (Illinois) , † August 12, 1967 ) was an American dentist .

Life

Coolidge grew up on a farm and attended Knox College in Galesburg from 1901. From 1903 he studied dentistry (Dental Surgery) at the Chicago College of Dental Surgery with the degree Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1906. He then stayed there until 1913 as an instructor before becoming professor and head of the Department of Materia Medica and Therapeutics at the College of Dentistry the University of Illinois was. From 1927 to 1948 he was a professor of therapeutics, preventive dentistry and oral hygiene at the Chicago College of Dental Surgery (from 1923 College of Dentistry) at Loyola University Chicago . He also had a dental practice in Chicago . In 1951 he moved his practice to Evanston, Illinois and retired as a dentist in 1958 .

He also went on to study as a practicing doctor: in 1925 he received a bachelor's degree from the Lewis Institute and in 1930 a master's degree from Northwestern University . In 1922 he was President of the Chicago Dental Society and a member of the Institute of Medicine in Chicago.

Act

He dealt mainly with endodontics and the periodontal membrane ( periodontium , periodontology). He founded the American Board of Endodontics , received its first diploma in 1957 (signed by himself), was one of the founders of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) and, after its recognition as a specialty of dentistry, received its first diploma in 1964. He was a Fellow and President (1947) of the American Academy of Periodontology , a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina .

Honors

  • Honorary doctorates (LLD and D. Sc.) From Loyola University.
  • In 1960 he received the William John Gies Award from the American College of Dentists.
  • The American Association of Endodontists presents the Edgar David Coolidge Award.
