Edgar Guhde

Edgar Guhde (born January 18, 1936 in Berlin ; † February 14, 2017 in Düsseldorf ) was a GDR civil rights activist and political prisoner in the GDR , author, librarian, lecturer and politician ( ÖDP ).

Guhde was initially active as a civil rights activist in the GDR in 1956 and 1957 , in which context he was in political custody there from 1957 to 1963 in prison in Brandenburg an der Havel , temporarily in solitary confinement . Among other things, he was a lecturer at the Berlin Librarian Academy and at the Citizenship Seminar e. V. Olpe . He has also made several articles in magazines and translations. 1984 appeared with Nature and Society. Introduction to ecological thinking and acting his most famous book.

In 1980 Guhde was the first spokesman for the newly founded Siegen-Wittgenstein district association of the Greens .

From March to October 1981 Guhde was the second deputy federal chairman of the Green Action Future (GAZ) , which in early 1982 became part of the newly founded Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP) . From 1983 to 1998 he was a member of the district committee of the Düsseldorf ÖDP and from January 1984 to January 1986 the party's federal treasurer. From 1984 to 1998 he worked as an editor at EcologyPolitics , the party newspaper of the ÖDP, the content of which he was instrumental in shaping. From 1984 to 1995 he was an employee of the ÖDP federal office in Bonn and until 1997 a member of the federal program commission. At the turn of the year 1998/1999 he resigned from the party. As a reason for this, he stated that the party had no "noteworthy [...] future beyond Bavaria ".

Commitment to animal rights

In addition, Guhde was active in the animal rights movement. He became a vegetarian as a child . Key experiences for this were, according to the company, numerous seriously injured and starved animals at the end of the Second World War and reading animal books. He has been vegan since the early 1990s .

As part of his animal rights work, he was chairman of the Political Working Group for Animal Rights in Europe e. V. (PAKT) and since 2006 member and since 2010 chairman of the board of trustees of the Hans-Rönn-Stiftung Menschen für Tiere . Both organizations are based in Düsseldorf.
