Edgar Lüscher (born September 15, 1925 in Reinach , Canton Aargau , Switzerland ; † January 16, 1990 ) was a Swiss experimental physicist who dealt with atomic and solid-state physics.

After graduating from the Aargau Cantonal School, Lüscher studied physics and mathematics at the ETH Zurich from 1944 onwards . a. with Paul Scherrer . The diploma was followed by several years of experience in industry. In 1955 he received his doctorate from the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne under Robert Mercier ( Un nouveau spectromètre à vide pour le domaine de Schumann ). In 1956 the habilitation followed . After working in industry, he was professor at the University of Illinois from 1959 and at the Technical University of Munich from 1964 . Since 1965 he was "External Scientific Member" at what was then the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics . In 1974 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

Lüscher is known for his multi-volume textbook on experimental physics and popular science books on physics. He has also written several television and radio programs on physics. Lüscher also dealt with acoustics.

Lüscher also devoted himself to teacher training. The "Edgar Lüscher Seminars" (now "Lüscher Lectures", weekend seminars for physics teacher training in Bavaria) at the Zwiesel high school , which he founded and which he founded, have been named after him. From 1978 to 1990 Lüscher was a member of the administrative board of the Deutsches Museum in Munich. He has been co-editor of Physics in Our Time since 1968 and of Physics and Didactics since 1973 .
