Edgar Seibel ( Russian Эдгар Зайбель ; born May 9, 1991 in Kubanka, USSR ) is a German writer, copywriter and translator of Russian-German origin.

Life

Edgar Seibel's paternal grandfather worked as the director of a large farm ( sovkhoz ), while his father, Constantine, a soldier in the Soviet-Afghan War , was a historian and headmaster. The mother, Helene, worked as an educator. After severe discrimination, the family emigrated to Germany in 1998 . The first few months she lived in Unna-Massen , then in the small town of Hallenberg in North Rhine-Westphalia . Edgar Seibel has been interested in literature since childhood and was awarded a diploma in literary writing from the Cornelia Goethe Academy (formerly the German Authors Academy, Frankfurt am Main) in 2011. Seibel worked, among other things, as a specialist for media and information services , is full-time as a copywriter , translator and book author. He gives anthropology , ethnology and psychology as his passionate interests . According to his own statements, he suffered from racist attacks in childhood and adolescence and was affected by obsessive thoughts for a while . From 2013 onwards, Seibel began to devote himself increasingly to the topics of ethnic groups and Germans from Russia, writing about them and giving lectures.

In his texts on Russian Germans, he primarily addresses integration problems in Germany. He describes the Russian-German resettlers as a " subgroup " of the Germans. In the almanac "Fremde Heimat Deutschland?", Literary journals of the Germans from Russia , he writes in his article under the title "The renegade Russian German and his allies" and a .: In Russian, German means "njemez". You can't imagine how degrading this Slavic term sounds to be pronounced. And not only because we are affected by discrimination, no, everyone who is able to speak Slavic will literally smell the disgusting thing about this word. Incidentally, the German word "Russian" sounds similar. It sounds - at least to us - like calling a mangy mutt or choking up a ball of saliva. It is clear that these terms reflect the inner (perhaps also old) relationship to the respective people [...] "And about the mentality of the Russian-German generations he writes, among other things:" In summary, one could say about the Russian-Germans of this generation [parent generation ] write that he is basically disappointed and torn. This enormous turmoil, which is much more devastating than the generation of the actual forcibly resettled Volga Germans , has led to a completely crazy custom that is unique to this generation: almost ritual-like, they mock Russians and theirs at home Russian Germans have different behavior, but on another day they can turn the tables a hundred and eighty degrees and scoff at German behavior. However, it should be noted that this is less about a real ridicule than about weighing up German and Russian behavior, driven by the desire to find yourself in one of the two. They unconsciously turned away from the Russians, but also from the Germans. Ancestry, not so much a German culture, is most important to them. As soon as you discover a person who was born in the states of the former Soviet Union and has a German surname, he immediately belongs to your clan [...].

On September 3, 2017, Seibel gave a lecture at the 1st World Congress of Russian Germans in Bad Homburg , where he criticized the use of the term "Germans with a migration background " on Russian Germans who are not real migrants due to their German origin . He published an article on the subject in the conservative German-Russian newspaper Rodina under the title "Insulting term: people with a migration background. For Russian Germans - apparently unacceptable". An excerpt from this was taken up by Nikolai Klimeniouk of Die WELT in his article "A minority that does not want to be", in which he critically examined the sympathy of many Russian Germans for the AfD party . Seibel commented on this in another article in Rodina. Seibel's demand that the Russian Germans no longer rank among the "Germans with a migration background" met with approval from the resettlers' party, Die Einheit , as their party newspaper reported in detail.

For the bilingual newspaper Jüdische Rundschau he translates Russian articles and also publishes his own, such as For example: "Russian-Jewish-Unknown: The Subbotniki " (April 2017) or "The Karaean Secret of Peter the Great " (May 2017).
