Life

Edmund Hottenroth's birthplace in Blasewitz

Edmund Hottenroth was born as the son of the valet Franz Aloys Hottenroth and Josepha Hottenroth, b. Busetti, born. Her ancestors were Italian merchants who came to Dresden while the Hofkirche was being built.

He first attended the Catholic school in Dresden and then completed a commercial apprenticeship. He taught himself how to draw and paint, and was taught by Caspar David Friedrich and Johann Clausen Dahl, among others . Together with his brother Woldemar , he made a trip to the Giant Mountains and Bohemia in 1826 . From 1829 he was in Paris (also together with his brother) until 1830, after which the joint study trip to Italy began. In Rome they belonged to the German-Roman circle of artists and were instructed by Joseph Anton Koch and Johann Christian Reinhart , among others .

While his brother returned to Germany in 1844, Edmund stayed in Rome and devoted himself to landscape painting; one of his works was the design of the Caffè Greco in Rome. He died in Rome in 1889 and was buried there.
