Edmund Ratz

Edmund Ratz (born April 4, 1933 in Zeitlofs , Bavaria ; † August 31, 2017 in Ansbach , Bavaria) was a German Lutheran theologian and long-time bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of European Russia (ELKER) and Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia , Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Central Asia (ELKRAS).

Life

Edmund Ratz grew up in Neuendettelsau and from 1955 studied theology at the Universities of Erlangen , Heidelberg , Göttingen and at the Augustana University in Neuendettelsau . From 1959 to 1960 he was a fellow of the World Council of Churches at Oberlin College (USA). In 1960 he obtained a master's degree in theology.

The years 1965 to 1969 took him to Bristol as pastor abroad and pastor at sea . From 1969 to 1974 he was executive director of the Lutheran Council of Great Britain and the Evangelical Synod of the German Language in the United Kingdom in London . From 1974 to 1977 he served as President of the Lutheran Council of Great Britain in London.

In 1977 Ratz returned to Germany and was appointed ecumenical advisor for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria as a councilor in the Munich regional church office . After four years of activity, he moved to the German National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation in Stuttgart .

In 1999 Edmund Ratz was elected Bishop of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ukraine (DELKU). From 2005 to 2009 he was - as successor to Georg Kretschmar - Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Central Asia (ELKRAS) with official seat in Saint Petersburg . In September 2007, Ratz also took over the office of Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of European Russia (ELCER), succeeding Bishop Siegfried Springer . On May 30, 2010, he was retired from all his offices in St. Petersburg. His successor as Archbishop of the ELKRAS was August Kruse , and Dietrich Brauer was introduced as his successor in the Bishopric of the ELKRAS on March 12, 2011 .
