Rubino was a “village” and has been a “municipality” since the decentralization of January 1, 2002, and a sub-prefecture ( sous-préfecture ) in the Département d'Agboville in the Agnéby region in the Ivory Coast in West Africa since 1977 .

geography

There is an Attian climate in Rubino . Vegetation and forest are dense. Rubino is around 25 km or 22 minutes by train north of the departmental capital Agboville on the Abidjan-Niger Railway , which is operated by SITARAIL , a subsidiary of the South African Railways.

history

During the colonization of Ivory Coast by the French, the resistance of the Abbey was particularly strong. This led to a battle at Rubino in 1910. The colonial rulers argued with the locals, among other things, about the route of the Abidjan-Niger Railway. The city now bears the name of the victorious French officer at the time .

politics

The hydrologist Angodji N'Gbesso of the Front Populaire Ivorien party (FPI; French for Ivorian Popular Front ) is the deputy for the National Assembly of the Sub-Prefecture for the term of office beginning in 2005 . Mayor is Hubert Dessi , an independent who holds the office for at least the second term of office (certainly already 2001-2005).

Infrastructure

Supply and communication

Rubino has electricity and running water. In Agnéby there are four water intakes which the drinking water supply of Agboville, Bongouanou , Mbatto serve and Rubino. Rubino is connected to the fixed-line telephone network, but not to the mobile telephone network, which, according to various local newspaper reports, is eagerly desired by the population - and viewed as lucrative given the size of the population.

Education

The city has over 50 primary schools and one secondary school. In cooperation with the local non-governmental organization Echo, developpement, stratégie en Côte d'Ivoire (EDS-CI), 17 new school canteens were recently set up, bringing the number to 51, which means that 98% of all Rubinos schools are equipped with canteens. The national average is 48%.

Healthcare

Rubino has health centers. In 2001/2002, concepts for micro-projects in the field of health promotion for a rural community were developed with Swiss participation. The cell of women committed to the media in the fight against AIDS and for women and children in Ivory Coast (Cellule des Femmes de Médias engagées dans la lutte contre le SIDA en faveur de la femme et de l'enfant en Côte d'Ivoire CFMS -CI) organized awareness days in 2005, as reported by the government newspaper Brotherhood in the Morning .

Churches

The Catholic parish of St. Hilary was raised to the status of a parish in 1983. She belonged to the pastoral circle of Agboville of the diocese of Yopougon and since October 14, 2006 to the diocese of Agboville .

population

According to the 2014 census, the population is 35,553. It is growing rapidly. The ethno-cultural composition of the population consists of Abbey, Krobu , various other locals and foreigners. In the agglomeration of Rubino, which includes the villages of Amangbeu , Gouabo , Ananguié , Allany , Banguié and Kotchimpo , there are almost 50,000 inhabitants.

economy

Ripe cotton ready to be harvested
teak wood

The main sources of income are agriculture and forestry.

Agriculture

According to reports from non-governmental organizations, the north and the center of the Agboville department around Rubino are so heavily used for agriculture that it has become almost impossible to find space for new plantations and plantations . The equilibrium based on traditional shifting cultivation , which allowed a plot of land to rest, is out of balance.

The Rubino Agricultural Cooperative (Société Coopérative Agricole de Rubino) produces high quality products such as coffee , cocoa , cashew nuts ( anacarde ), cotton , palm kernels and chilli . Despite the crisis , it managed to present a balanced bill between 2002 and 2004. She has been looking for new acceptance partners since spring 2005.

forestry

La Séguié (Rubino) teak is lighter and less dense than Bamoro ( Bouaké ), which is even and golden, of high aesthetic quality, which is more appreciated by buyers. The reason for this lies in the climatological conditions.

Every year, many square kilometers of tropical rainforest are cleared, on the one hand to practice plantation , livestock or arable farming on the cleared areas , and some of the felled wood is used for the production of furniture . The largest part is used as cheap construction timber or used to make cheap copy paper. The little forest that still stands in the south of the Ivory Coast is being systematically plundered. The drama, however, according to a report by the government newspaper Fraternité Matin , is that this is being done in cooperation with the government agencies responsible for forest protection . In Rubino there is already no more teak and in 2007 everything will probably be cut down.
