The Edo ( Japanese 江 戸 川 , Edo-gawa ) is a tributary of the Tone in the Kantō region on the Japanese main island of Honshū .

course

The Edo divides from the Tone at the level of the districts of Goka and Sakai in the city of Sashima in Ibaraki Prefecture and runs south to Tokyo Bay . Its course forms the borders of the prefectures of Ibaraki , Saitama , Chiba and Tokyo .

Floods

The worst flooding in recent history occurred as a result of Typhoon Kathleen in 1947. 80,000 hectares in the area of Katsushika and Noda were flooded for a period of nine months due to dam breaks . Since then, however, the protection provided by dykes has improved significantly, not least because of the residential areas in the river's catchment area that have developed over the decades. Nevertheless, as a result of typhoons, flooding caused by dike breaches occurred again and again, especially in the city of Matsudo , each of which affected several thousand houses.

Flood protection

The river is also used for flood protection, as the water from the outer drainage canal for the capital area ( Shutoken Gaikaku Hōsuiro , Japanese 首都 圏 外 郭 放水 路 ) is diverted into the Pacific.

Legal status

The Japanese river right referred to Edo as a river 1st degree .
