Eduard Lill (born October 20, 1830 in Brüx , Bohemia , Austrian Empire , † July 30, 1900 in Gorizia , Austria-Hungary ) was an Austrian officer and engineer.

Life

Eduard Lill studied mathematics at the German Technical University in Prague in 1848/1849 . In 1850 he joined the army and served in the engineering troops . From 1852 to 1856 he studied at the army engineering school in Klosterbruck . After completing his studies, he served for another decade in the engineering troops and was stationed in Esseg , Kronstadt and Spalato . Lill ended his military career in 1868 with the rank of captain and took up a position as an engineer with the Austrian Northwest Railway . For the railroad he was initially in charge of track construction near Trautenau, but due to a serious accident he was soon limited to office work. From 1872 to 1875 he was secretary to the building director Hellwag, after which he worked as a technical assistant in the general management. In 1885 he became head of the statistical department and in 1894 he retired as chief inspector.

Today Lill is best known for his contributions to mathematics and transportation science. In 1867 he published an article in which he described a graphical method for determining the roots of polynomials. This is essentially a clever illustration or geometric interpretation of the Horn scheme and is now known as the Lills method . Also named after him is the Lill circle , which is obtained from a slight modification of the application of his method for determining zeros to normalized quadratic functions. In the Transportation Sciences carries Lillsche travel law his name, one of the first scientific attempts to model traffic was.
