Live and act

The son of a Chemnitz weaver studied political science and history at the University of Leipzig from 1837 to 1840 . During his studies he became friends with Robert Blum and Wilhelm Adolph von Trützschler . From 1841 he was editor of the opposition magazine Die Sonne in his hometown of Chemnitz , in which he a. a. campaigned for public court hearings, the introduction of freedom of the press and for an improvement of the situation at Saxon schools. After he had reported on German Catholicism in 1845 , the pioneer of which in Chemnitz was Franz Xaver Rewitzer , his license to publish his newspaper was revoked on August 12th of that year, which is why he and Gödsche submitted a petion to the Second Saxon Chamber.

In December 1848 he was elected to the second chamber of the Saxon state parliament in the 22nd electoral district (Leipzig, new extension) . After he appeared at the constitution of the state parliament on January 17, 1849 instead of the usual black tailcoat in a simple blue coat, his political opponents in the Chemnitzer Bote ridiculed him as follows:

“Lining made of blue skirt
And unkempt and unwashed
The front paws in the pockets
So he stepped before the king. "

Nevertheless, he was elected to the Presidium of the State Parliament by the members of the Second Chamber, where he acted as one of the two secretaries. He was chairman of the Leipzig section of the Fatherland Association . After the state parliament was dissolved on April 30, 1849 , it took part in the barricade fighting of the Dresden May uprising . Jäkel then fled to Switzerland. He died in September 1874 in Frauenfeld , Canton Thurgau .
