Eduard Thomann

Eduard R. Thomann (born February 1, 1869 in Moscow ; † January 4, 1955 in Baden AG ), reformed , resident in St. Gallen , was a Swiss railway engineer .

Life

1887 Born in Moscow Eduard Thomann, son of the director Rupert Thomann and the Anna Katharina nee Nabholz put the Matura in Zurich from. Thomann then completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith at the Oerlikon machine factory , in 1890 he began studying mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich, which he obtained in 1894 with the academic degree of Dipl. Masch.-Ing. ETH graduated.

As a direct consequence, Eduard Thomann took up an engineering position at Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) , now Asea Brown Boveri, which he held until 1902. In the same year he opened an office for the project planning of electric mountain railways with Emil Strub , in 1904 he switched to the rail department of the BBC, which he served as director from 1909 until he retired in 1933.

At the BBC, Eduard Thomann was responsible for planning the first electrically operated mountain railways Gornergrat , Stansstad-Engelberg , Jungfrau and Burgdorf-Thun . Thomann was also involved in the electrification of the Simplon Railway (1906) and the Lötschberg Railway (1913), among others .

Eduard Thomann, who was a member of the Swiss Study Commission for Electrical Railway Operations and the Swiss School Board , had been married to Ella Julia, the daughter of Karl Jakob Ott, since 1897. He died in 1955 just before the age of 86.
