Edison Eduardo Bonomi Varela (born October 14, 1948 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan politician .

Eduardo Bonomi was born in his parents' house on Calle Simón Bolívar . His school education led through the Escuela Nº 81 and the Liceo in Malvín . From 1966 to 1970 he played football for the Montevideo Wanderers for two years . From 1969 studied at the veterinary faculty of the Universidad de la República . During his studies he headed the student council and was a delegate of the Federación de Estudiantes Universitarios del Uruguay (FEUU). In 1970 he joined the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional - Tupamaros (MLN-T).

He never finished his studies and only got into the fourth year of his studies when he was arrested in 1972. He remained imprisoned until March 1985 during the civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay. After his release from prison, he worked as a bookseller. From May 1985 he worked for the company Promopes , which was converted into a workers' cooperative in the 1990s and in 1997 by the Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay (BROU). Bonomi and his colleagues who helped found this cooperative acquired the company. However, the company had to close on January 13, 1999. He also resumed his political engagement after his release from prison. From 1987 he was a member of the central committee of the MLN-T and was a co-founder of the Movimiento de Participación Popular , in which he also held a leadership role in the following years.

Bonomi, who belongs to the Frente Amplio and, within it, to the Movimiento de Participación Popular Espacio 609 (MPP-E609), sat as a representative of the Montevideo Department and for the Partido Encuentro Progesista / Frente Amplio for the first time in the 45th legislative period from May 21, 2000 until May 27, 2000 and then in numerous other periods of this period as deputy member of the Cámara de Representantes . From November 17, 2003 to December 8, 2003 he was also deputy senator in the Cámara de Senadores . Since February 15, 2005, he was then in the 46th legislative term, also as a representative of Montevideo, holder of a titular mandate in the Chamber of Deputies for the alliance Encuentro Progesista / Frente Amplio / Nueva Mayoría. In the legislative period that began in 2010, he holds a mandate as senator and belongs to the Sublema El Presidente para Todos of the Lista Topolansky.

From March 1, 2005 to July 13, 2009 he was Minister of Labor and Social Affairs under President Tabaré Vázquez . Bonomi has been Minister of the Interior in José Mujica's government since March 1, 2010 . After Fernando Lorenzo's resignation , Bonomi also took over the interim management of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance.
