Eduardo García Maroto

Eduardo García Maroto (born December 14, 1903 in Jaén ; † November 26, 1989 in Madrid ) was one of the pioneers of Spanish cinema as a film director , screenwriter , film editor , actor and production manager .

Life

García Maroto went to Madrid early on, where he worked for "Madrid Films" from 1923, also as an actor, for example. B. in films like Las de Méndez (1927) or Viva Madrid que es mi pueblo (1928) by Fernando Delgado . A little later he went to the Bobis studios in Paris , where he was confronted with the early talkies; Finally, he worked as an editor in the film editing department at the film company CEA.

From a technical as well as artistic point of view, he set the course for film production in his home country and, along with fellow campaigners such as Valeriano León and Miguel Mihura, brought social, political and humanistic aspects to Spanish films. From 1934 he did this in the capacity of director: that year he directed La hija del penal and the short films Una de fieras , Y, ahora, una de ladrones and Una de miedo for CIFESA . During the Spanish Civil War he worked on documentaries in Portugal until, in 1939, again in Spain, he directed Los cuatro Robinsones with actors such as Antonio Mico , Alberto Romea and Mary Santpere . Two years later, Oro vil was an early European western . In 1945 he received another contract in the neighboring country, where the documentaries A Mantilha de Beatriz (1946) and Não Há Rapazes Maus (1947) were created.

From the mid-1950s García Maroto was active as production manager for major international productions with Hollywood participation such as Pride and Passion , Salomon and the Queen of Sheba , Spartacus and Patton - Rebel in Uniform , which were filmed in Spain.

In addition to his filmic activities, García Maroto directed the play Los Amantes de Teruel and acted as a critic for the stage and screen. For his reviews in ABC and the magazine Hermano Lobo he used the pseudonym Marisa Barba .

In 2005 a documentary was made about his life.

In 1955 García Maroto received the Spanish Film Writer's Prize for the screenplay for Tres eran tres .
