Edward Cary Hayes

Edward Cary Hayes (born February 10, 1868 in Lewiston, Maine , † August 7, 1928 in Urbana, Illinois ) was an American sociologist and 11th President of the American Sociological Association .

After working as a pastor in Augusta (Maine) , Hayes studied philosophy at the University of Chicago from 1899 , but soon turned to sociology and became a student of Albion Woodbury Small . During a one-year study visit to Berlin, he heard Alfred Vierkandt and Georg Simmel . After receiving his doctorate in 1902, he first taught at Miami University and in 1907 moved to the University of Illinois , where he worked as a sociology professor until his death.
