Edward Conze

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edward Conze (* 18th March 1904 in Forest Hill , London Borough of Lewisham ; † 24. September 1979 in Yeovil , Somerset ) was a philologist and Buddhism watchers and one of the first Western scientists intensively with the Mahayana - Buddhism have dealt.

Life

Conze was born in London as the child of German diplomats, which also gave him British citizenship.

Conze studied philosophy , psychology and indology in Germany at the universities of Tübingen, Heidelberg, Kiel, Cologne and Hamburg . In 1928 he did his doctorate with Max Scheler (title of the dissertation: The concept of metaphysics with Franciscus Suarez, SJ ). During his time in Heidelberg, Conze first came into contact with Buddhism as a Marxist with Max Walleser (1874–1954).

In 1933 Conze emigrated to England because of his British citizenship, where he came into contact with Buddhism again through his acquaintance with Har Dayal and the writings of DT Suzuki . In 1946, Conze began translating the Heart Sutra for many years in the field of Prajnaparamita literature. Up to Conze, only very few parts of it had been translated into Western languages (by IJ Schmidt and Eugène Burnouf, among others ).

Edward Conze felt himself to be a Buddhist, but he refused to visit the Buddhist cultures in Asia and limited himself to researching classical texts. Volker Zotz stated: "He was aware that his ideals could hardly stand up to the reality of those countries in which one officially professed them."
