After training at the Trinity College of Cambridge University , he traveled in 1801, 1805 and 1806 Greece . After that he lived mainly in Naples and Rome , where he married the daughter of a count, Teresa Giraud. He died in 1832 while exploring the Sabine Mountains around Rome. Since 1815 he was an honorary member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

His work A Classical and Topographical Tour Through Greece During the Years 1801, 1805 and 1806 is aimed at both a classically educated and a broader audience. It is based on his own drawings and a travel diary that he revised for publication. Mainly he deals with ancient Greece . But he also reports on modern Greece, trying to trace the customs of the Greeks of his time back to antiquity, without considering that Byzantine and Ottoman influences could have had an effect in the meantime . His descriptions show a clear dominance of the visual: Often, for example, the appearance of a village is described in detail without going into economic or social conditions.
