Edward Doherty
Edward "Eddie" J. Doherty (born October 30, 1890 in Chicago , Illinois , † 1975 ) was an American writer and screenwriter who was nominated once for the Oscar for best original story.
Life
Doherty first worked as a journalist for various daily newspapers and wrote numerous novels and short stories before he also created some templates for films in the 1930s and 1940s.
He co-wrote the screenplay for Five Heroes (The Sullivans, 1944) with Jules Schermer , a war drama about five brothers who served in the US Navy . Anne Baxter , Thomas Mitchell and Selena Royle played the leading roles in the film, directed by Lloyd Bacon . Doherty and Schermer were nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Story, but the award went to Leo McCarey for The Road to Happiness .
In 1943 he married Ekaterina Fyodorovna Kolyschkine de Hueck , who came from Russia and who founded the Friendship House missionary society in the early 1930s . After the marriage there followed numerous books with religious content, but also a biography about his wife under the title Tumbleweed: A Biography of Catherine Doherty and a biography about the founder of the Montfortan Order , Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort with the title Wisdom's Fool: A Biography of St. Louis de Montfort . In addition, he and his wife founded the Madonna House Apostolate lay movement in 1947 .
In 1969 Doherty received the ordination as a priest by the Archeparch of the Archeparch Akka , Joseph-Marie Raya, in the rite of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church .
