Edward Gomez

Edward Anthony Gomez is a Gambian lawyer who previously served in the Gambian police for over 20 years . From 2010 to 2012 he was Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

Life

In the 1950s he joined the police force and in 1966 took a six-month course to become an officer candidate at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, United Kingdom. He later completed another course at the School of Infantry in Warminster . On his return he was used as police commander in the Western Division .

He also served as Personal Adjutant ( ADC ) to Sir Farimang Singhateh , who later became Governor General of Gambia. After the independence of Gambia in 1965 the former President Sir Dawda Jawara also as ADC.

In 1973 Gomez studied law at the University of Lagos (Nigeria), later in the United Kingdom, where he was also admitted to the bar. He is also a member of Gray's Inn in London . He then returned to Gambia and continued to serve in the police force until he retired in 1984.

On March 4, 2010, he was employed as a police advisor to succeed Famara RI Jammeh . Shortly afterwards, on 19 March 2010 he was appointed by President Yahya Jammeh (as Minister of Justice and Attorney General english Attorney General and Secretary of State for Justice ) of the Republic of The Gambia to the Cabinet appointed. He succeeded Marie Saine-Firdaus .

He was Minister of Justice and Attorney General until 2012 and was replaced by Lamin Jobarteh .

family

Gomez married Tina Faal , who was later also politically active. The marriage ended in divorce and Faal later married the Malian businessman Foutanga Babani Sissoko .

Gomez 'daughter Georgina Gomez (born 1985) was sentenced to five years in prison in December 2014 for being involved in tobacco smuggling while working for the embassy in London. Nathalie Gomez-Ceesay , who has worked in the presidential office for many years, is also his daughter.
