Edward Joseph Hoffman
Edward Joseph Hoffman (born January 1, 1942 in St. Louis , Missouri , † July 1, 2004 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American scientist.
Life
Hoffman received his doctorate in 1971 from Demetrios George Sarantites in nuclear chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis with the thesis De-excitation of compound nuclei by gamma-ray emission in competition with nucleon emission . In 1973, together with Michael E. Phelps, he developed the first PET scanner that was also suitable for human medicine . He was appointed professor at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical School in 1976 .
He was married to Carolyn Hoffman.
