Michael E. Phelps

Michael E. Phelps (born August 24, 1939 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American mathematician and chemist and is considered one of the fathers of positron emission tomography (PET).

Phelps graduated from Western Washington University with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and chemistry in 1965 . In 1970 he received his PhD in chemistry from Washington University in St. Louis . He began his scientific career at Washington University Medical School (1970 to 1975). From 1975 to 1976 Phelps worked at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia .

He is a Norton Simon Professor and heads the UCLA Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles , where he has worked since 1976. He is actively researching various medical fields. He is also Director of the Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging , Professor of Biomathematics, Director of the Institute for Molecular Medicine and Head of the Nuclear Medicine Department .

Phelps has received a number of scientific honors, including the Rosenthal Foundation Award from the American College of Physicians in 1987 , the George Von Hevesy Prize (twice) from the Von Hevesy Foundation , in 1984 the Sarah L. Poiley Memorial Award from the New York Academy of Sciences , 1983 the Paul Aebersold Award of the Society of Nuclear Medicine , received the Enrico Fermi Prize in 1998 , was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1999 and received the Pasarow Award in 1991 , the Charles F. Kettering Prize of the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation in 2001 and in 2007 the Massry Prize .

He has published over 520 scientific papers.

The first positron emission tomograph was completed in January 1974. He published the results of his work in 1975 together with the other "father" of PET, Michel Ter-Pogossian . Phelps was also involved in the manufacture of the first commercial PET system, which was shipped to the University of California in December 1976.
