Edward McKnight Kauffer (born December 14, 1891 in Montana , † October 22, 1954 in New York , NY ) was an American graphic artist . He spent much of his life in Great Britain .

Live and act

Kauffer studied in San Francisco at the California School of Design, in Chicago at the Art Institute of Chicago and in London, where he received a major contract from the London Underground Transport Company in 1915. In gratitude to his mentor, Professor Joseph McKnight at the University of Utah, he added his last name to his name. His work is dominated by the billboards between the two world wars and advertising design. His book illustrations (for Nonesuch Press, among others ) and stage sets also became widely known. In 1940 Kauffer returned to the USA, to New York.

One of his classic designs has since been re-imposed as a rug by Habitat. The original hangs today in the British Victoria and Albert Museum in London. For many years he worked with the well-known textile designer Marion Dorn , whom he married in 1950. At documenta III 1964 in Kassel , his works were shown in the graphics department .
