Edward Thomas Hughes (born November 13, 1920 in Lansdowne , Pennsylvania , † December 25, 2012 ) was Bishop of Metuchen .

Life

Edward Thomas Hughes, son of Irish immigrants, studied philosophy and Catholic theology at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pittsburgh, and was ordained a priest on May 31, 1947 in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Philadelphia . He initially taught religion and history at St. James High School in Chester. In 1950 he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Masters in American History . In 1954 he became an assistant pastor in Jenkintown, and later a student pastor in the Newman Club of Beaver College . In 1956 he became Vice Rector of St. Charles Seminary . From 1961 to 1970 he was superintendent of the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia , and later pastor in Secane, Pennsylvania.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 14, 1976 titular bishop of Segia and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia . The Archbishop of Philadelphia, John Joseph Cardinal Krol , donated him episcopal ordination on July 21 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops Gerald Vincent McDevitt , John Joseph Graham and Martin Nicholas Lohmuller from Philadelphia.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Metuchen on December 11, 1986 ; he was inducted into office on February 5, 1987. On July 8, 1997, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Hughes got involved in politics and citizenship. In 1994 he supported the Women at the Altar initiative . In 1995, he opposed the Democratic candidate for New Jersey governorship, Jim McGreevey, because of his comments in the abortion debate . In 1996 he was the central figure who prevented an extensive hospital merger in New Brunswick. Between 1987 and 1997 he was an activist for the Respect for Life initiative in his diocese.
