Edward Tuckerman (born December 7, 1817 in Boston ; died March 15, 1886 in Amherst , Massachusetts) was an American botanist and lichenologist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Tuck. "

Life

He was born in 1817 to the Boston merchant Edward Tuckerman and his wife Sophie (May) Tuckerman. He attended the Boston Latin School , then Union College in Schenectady (BA 1837). He then studied law at Harvard Law School (LL. B. 1839). Even after graduating, he stayed in Cambridge and attended courses at Harvard Divinity School , among other things . 1841–42 he went on an educational trip to Germany and Sweden. On his return he studied again at Union College (MA 1844), then again at Harvard (AB 1847), and then enrolled again at Harvard Divinity School, which he eventually left without a degree. In 1845 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1849 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

In 1854 he married Sarah Eliza Sigourney Cushing in Boston and eventually moved with her to Amherst, where he lived until his death. From 1854 he gave history lectures at Amherst College , where he was now a full professor of Eastern history. However, he was particularly interested in botany, and from 1858 until his death he held the chair in this subject. In 1868 he was accepted into the National Academy of Sciences .

His main merit is research into the lichens of North America. He carried out his field research in New England, mostly on the slopes of Mount Washington , where a mountain valley, the Tuckerman Ravine , was named after him after his death . He also made use of the progressive development of the American West through the expansion of the railroad network, by having herbarium specimens sent from remote parts of the country.

Honors

According to Tuckerman, the plant genus Tuckermania is Klotzsch from the family of the heather plants (Ericaceae) and the lichen genus Tuckermannopsis is Gyeln. and named Tuckneraria Randlane & A.Thell .
