Edward Tuohy (born March 17, 1908 in Duluth (Minnesota) , USA; † February 12, 1959 ) was an American anesthetist , best known for the development of the Tuohy needle named after him . This is now the most widely used puncture needle in the epidural anesthesia , an epidural regional anesthesia procedures .

Tuohy grew up in the American Midwest, in 1929 he completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of Minnesota . He then studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania , from 1933 he worked as an intern for internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic . From 1935 he switched to anesthesia and in 1936 received his first Master of Science degree in anesthesia in the USA. During World War II he served as a doctor in the US Army. After the war he became chief anesthesiologist in Georgetown. In 1947 he became president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists , 1951 professor of anesthesia at the University of Southern California . In 1959 he died of a stroke.

Edward Tuohy developed the puncture cannula later named after him in the 1940s. Crucial changes to the previously used needles were in particular the curved tip, which increased the success rates of the anesthetic procedures. Tuohy did not invent this principle, however, but adopted it from the dentist Ralph L. Huber (1890–1953). He had developed the curved tip of the cannula in order to alleviate the pain caused by injection into blood vessels and tissue trauma. Tuohy neglected Huber when describing his modified needle, which is criticized today.
