Life

New York State Newspaper Building (1875)

Edward Uhl was born as the youngest son of Jacob Uhl and Anna Uhl, b. Behr to the editors of the New York State Newspaper . He received his education in public schools. He then followed his older brother Hermann, who had been studying in Zurich since 1860, to the local polytechnic . Here he joined the Corps Rhenania in 1863 . He later moved to the Karlsruhe Polytechnic , where he joined the Corps Franconia .

After returning to the United States , he was sent to Guatemala as a consul . However, he hated the political conditions under Ulysses S. Grant's administration . He resigned from office and never again took an active part in politics. For many years he lived as a farmer in Ohio . At the urging of his stepfather Oswald Ottendorfer , he returned to New York to actively contribute to the New York State newspaper. Even before his father's death in 1852 he had become a partner in the newspaper, which his mother and stepfather had led to a circulation that was comparable to that of the English-language New York Times and New York Tribune . As long as his health allowed, he was managing director of the newspaper and, after the death of Oswald Ottendorfer in 1900, president of the newspaper publisher. Like his mother and stepfather, he did a lot for charities. In Massachusetts he owned a ranching farm called one of the finest ... in the Northern States . He died unmarried after a long illness at his home at 150 Central Park South.
