August Brunner

August Brunner SJ (born January 3, 1894 in Orschwihr , † April 11, 1985 in Munich ) was a German Catholic theologian and philosopher .

Life

Brunner dealt mainly with Thomas Aquinas , Husserl and Sartre . The focus of his philosophical interest was epistemology . Brunner was one of the editors of the monthly philosophical-theological magazine Voices of the Time .

Brunner entered the German province of the Society of Jesus in 1912 . He made the novitiate in Feldkirch, Austria . He then started studying philosophy in Valkenburg, the Netherlands, and was drafted as a nurse during the First World War . From 1921 theological studies followed, which led him from 1923 to 1925 to the French study house in Ore Place near Hastings . There he met Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Henri de Lubac . He was ordained a priest in 1924 and completed his training in Ireland in 1926. After that he was first used in pastoral care in Stockholm .

From 1929 he taught philosophy in Valkenburg. 1932–37 he was co-editor of the journal Scholastik . After the Philosophical Faculty had to be dissolved in 1936 under pressure from the National Socialists , he went to the French University of the Order on the island of Jersey in 1937 , where he took over a chair for logic and metaphysics . In 1941 he went to Paris , since 1943 he taught in Vals-près-le-Puy ( Haute-Loire department ). In 1946 he went to Munich, where he was part of the editorial team of the monthly magazine Voices of the Time .
